Description
The Old Library is a 2-storey building constructed in Flemish bond brickwork, featuring an ashlar lower storey and dressings, topped with a graded slate roof. The main block presents a symmetrical five-window range in baroque style. The central bay is emphasized by pilasters leading to a segmental open pediment, which displays a coat of arms. The entrance is set back in a segmental archway with a prominent keystone, topped by a steep pediment supported by heavy brackets. Iron gates enclose the porch area.
The lower storey features arched segmentally arched tripartite small-paned windows, each with keystones and continuous hood moulds. The upper storey has a continuous band of three-light mullioned windows, separated by wider panelled pilasters. The angle pilasters and those defining the central bay are adorned with high relief cartouches beneath a heavy modillion cornice that extends across the central pediment. Atop the roof sits a small square-section cupola. The rear range includes six sash windows arranged in pairs, with a later cross wing extending beyond.
