Description
The stables at Argoed Hall are a purpose-built, Mannerist structure dating from the 19th century, notable for their architectural design. This single-storey, U-shaped building features a tall, symmetrical front made of brightly colored brick and topped with a slate roof. The projecting wings have distinctive facades that include semicircular pediments and circular windows, linked by a screen wall with a balustraded parapet that encloses a small courtyard. The stepped pediments are topped with ball finials and flanked by swagged pilasters that stop short of the overall cornice, which sweeps up over the small-pane circular windows. These windows are framed with broad terracotta surrounds that include keystones and aprons. The central segmental carriage arch is adorned with voussoirs.
The courtyard, which was formerly covered, features glazed brickwork on the lower part of the wall, with a similar band above. In the northwest corner, there is a square-based water tower that becomes polygonal above, featuring Venetian-type windows on alternating sides, along with terracotta hoodmoulds, aprons, and dentil cornices. A weathervane sits atop the tower.
Inside, the stables have a coved ceiling and walls adorned with blue, cream, and brown glazed tiling. They retain three fine stalls with ornate ironwork stanchions and acorn finials, manufactured by John Davies, Sanitary Engineer, from Ty Coch in Llangollen. Additionally, there is a two-bay Saddle Room with an arched truss and pitch pine fittings, along with a tiled floor.
