Description
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a Grade I listed structure consisting of 19 spans that crosses the River Dee at a height of 38 meters and has a total length of 307 meters. The spans are made of cast iron plates that are bolted at their flanges. The trough that holds the water is constructed from segmental plates with radiating flanges on the outside. The upright flanges are thickened at the base to create the appearance of a string course. Each span of the trough is supported from below by four cast iron arches, with the outer two designed as ribbed plates that extend the lines of the trough ribs, resembling classical arch voussoirs, complete with a central 'keystone'.
On the east side, a towing path is elevated over the waterway by curving cast iron posts and beams, along with wrought iron ties, allowing boats to pass underneath. A cast iron handrail with vertical railings is attached to the outside of the towpath, while there is no handrail on the western side of the trough.
The aqueduct features 18 piers made of finely dressed stone, which are hollow in their upper sections. These piers taper towards the top and reach the level of the trough, with small cornices from which the arches spring. The four piers located in the River Dee have prominent cutwaters. At both ends of the aqueduct, there are massive curving abutments, with handrails extending onto them. A cast iron plaque on the river bank pier on the Froncysyllte side commemorates the canal's purpose and the laying of the first stone on 25 July 1795.
