Description
The screen and gates closing the formal garden at Erddig are made of wrought and cast iron, painted black with some gilding. The gates are centrally placed and flanked by railings. The main part of the gate features three vertical tiers of decorative uprights, which are interspersed with scrollwork and drop leaf motifs. An overthrow, topped by a ball finial, includes designs such as orange leaves and rinceau. The handle and lock plates are adorned with a reclining lion. The side railings are topped with a continuous cresting of scrollwork and twisted finials, and there is a section of horizontal work that contains a foliate motif. The railings also include additional decorative elements.
