Description

The Trevor Mausoleum, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, is an elaborate neo-Norman structure built from upper coal measures rock-faced sandstone and ashlar work, topped with a stone slab roof and raised gables. This single cell building features dressed clasping buttresses at each corner and an arched entrance on the west gable. The entrance has a round arch adorned with finely carved chevron and guilloche patterns, supported by intricately carved twin nook shafts. It is fitted with a boarded oak door that has elaborate iron hinges and a small barred viewing window. The side walls display an alternating billet mid-wall string and a tightly carved chevron corbel table that supports the stone gutter. Each side features a small raised dormer with a similar chevron arch that rises into a steep gable, containing glazing with tinted puntils. A dedication plaque on the door commemorates Arthur William, 2nd Baron Trevor, who died in 1923, his wife Rosamund, who died in 1942, and their child who died in 1904.

Inside, the mausoleum is vaulted with stone ribs, with those on the east side descending beside a niche on the east wall. The interior houses a lifesize white marble figure of a winged angel, standing on a small hemisphere and tenderly holding the girl child Mary Rosamund, who passed away in 1904 at the age of 5.
