Description

The Old Smithy Cottage is a 2-storey, 2-window cottage that includes an attached smithy, built from rubble and topped with a medium-pitched slate roof featuring plain eaves. The cottage is surrounded by rubble garden walls that return to the main façade to the right of center, and there is a 19th-century iron scrolled gate. The central entrance has a late 19th-century door and doorcase that is slightly recessed and has a stop-chamfered design. To the left of the entrance, there is a 2-part 12-pane fixed casement window that is nearly flush with thin glazing bars. Under the eaves, there are two additional similar windows, which are of the sliding sash type. To the right of the entrance, beyond the garden wall's return, there is a 20th-century boarded garage door that likely replaced a similar window. The cottage features a plain brick gable chimney on the left and another similar one off-center with a simply moulded top. At the rear, there is a cat-slide extension with boarded doors and a contemporary fixed iron-framed multi-pane window that has intersecting tracery and an ogee head, resembling those seen in the 1790s additions at Nerquis Hall. There is also a modern brick rendered toilet extension adjacent to the cottage.

The smithy is stepped up from the cottage and constructed of rubble and slate, with a brick gable apex and rear elevation that has been partly renewed. It features a small brick gable chimney on the right and a larger chimney at the rear. The large entrance on the left has a tooled sandstone lintel and a modern boarded stable door. Above this entrance, there is a loading bay with a boarded door and a stone cill. To the right of the ground floor entrance, there is a contemporary slightly recessed 30-pane fixed iron casement window with a sandstone lintel and quoins on the right reveal, which has a segmental-arched head and an external boarded shutter with a segmental arch. Above this, there is a near-flush 30-pane part-fixed iron casement window. A similar (though replaced) window is located on the ground floor of the north face, with the original one above it. The rear has modern open entrances with concrete lintels. Inside, there are furnaces located on the north and west (rear) walls, each with stepped brick hoods.
