Description

This is a late 18th century to early 19th century, two-storey, two-window cottage that is attached to a contemporary smithy. The building is constructed of rubble and features a medium-pitched slate roof with plain eaves. The cottage has rubble garden walls that return to the main face to the right of center, and there is a 19th century iron scrolled gate. The central entrance has a topped-chamfered, slightly recessed late 19th century door and doorcase. To the left of the entrance, there is a two-part 12-pane fixed casement window, which is nearly flush with thin glazing bars. Under the eaves, there are two additional similar windows, but these are of the sliding sash type. To the right of the entrance, beyond the return of the garden wall, is a 20th century boarded garage door, likely replacing a similar window. The cottage features a plain brick gable chimney on the left and another similar chimney that is off-center with a simply moulded top. At the rear, there is a cat-slide extension with boarded doors and a contemporary fixed iron-framed, multi-pane window that has intersecting tracery and an ogee head, resembling those seen in the 1790s additions at Nerquis Hall. There is also an adjacent modern brick rendered toilet extension.

Stepped up from the cottage is the smithy, which is built of rubble and slate, similar to the cottage, but has a brick south gable apex and rear elevation, with some parts renewed. The smithy has a small brick gable chimney on the right and a larger chimney at the rear. There is a large entrance on the left with a tooled sandstone lintel and a modern boarded stable door. Above this entrance is a loading bay with a boarded door and a stone cill. To the right of the ground floor entrance, there is a contemporary slightly recessed 30-pane fixed iron casement window with a sandstone lintel and quoins to the right reveal, featuring a segmental-arched head and a segmental-arched external boarded shutter. Above this, there is a near-flush 30-pane part-fixed iron casement window. A similar window, though replaced, is found on the ground floor of the north face, with the original one above it. The rear has modern open entrances with concrete lintels. Furnaces are located on the north and west (rear) walls, each with stepped brick hoods.
