Description

Plas Hendre is a sub-medieval storeyed farmhouse set into a hillside slope. The earliest part of the house is the lower range, likely dating from the late 16th century, to which an upper parlour cross-wing was added in 1635. This cross-wing forms an "L" shape with the primary range, partly overlapping it and likely replacing an original parlour wing. In the late Georgian period, alterations and additions were made to the lower section of the farmhouse.

The construction is of rubble, with red brick dressings and chimneys on the lower range, and modern stone mullioned windows on the cross-wing and rear, where some original windows have been replaced. The roof is medium-pitched and covered in slate. The farmhouse was undergoing extensive restoration in the summer of 1994.

The main entrance is on the southeast front of the lower range, which has a two-window facade featuring late Georgian near-flush 16-pane sash windows with cambered voussoirs to the ground floor. There is an entrance to the left, currently open with a similar cambered head. A modern brick stack is centrally positioned. Stepping down to the right is a single-bay range, added during the early 19th-century remodelling. It has a cambered-headed entrance with a boarded door and a modern window above. The cross-wing adjoins the main range on the left. The entrance at the angle with the main front is currently open, with a disturbed opening to the left. The gable end of the cross wing shows dressed stone detailing, including a gable parapet and kneelers. It has modern ovolo-moulded three-light mullioned windows and a renewed date shield indicating 1635. A fine lateral chimney is visible on the northwest face, gabled and kneelered at the top, with a renewed brick stack. Similar windows are present on the ground floor to the left and a taller window to the right, both with new stone lintels. A modern square stone opening is above. Attached at a right angle to the left is a single-storey outhouse with a kneelered gable to the northeast. The rear gable of the cross-wing has a two-light window with a three-light one above, in a similar style. The rear of the lower range is plain, with a low, off-centre entrance. A loft door and an external stepped access are located at the rear of the lower addition. There are two disturbed window openings on the downhill gable end.

Inside, the lower range has a cross-passage with a square-framed timber partition to the right. The right-hand room features a heavily beamed ceiling with stopped and chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. An inglenook fireplace is located at the lower end, with a modern timber bressumer. Behind the passage, the passage turns left along the side of the chimney toward the cross-wing. A straight flight of stairs with plain turned balusters leads to an upper landing. Two ground-floor rooms in the cross-wing have timber-framed lath-and-plaster partitions and beamed ceilings, similar to the right-hand room in the lower range. An inglenook fireplace occupies the entire length of the downhill wall of the north room, backing onto the cross-passage, suggesting it belonged to an earlier 16th-century parlour that was retained when the 1635 wing was built. The roof is entirely modern, with a raised pitch, though one contemporary truss in the lower range survives in part. The first-floor gable-end room of the cross-wing has a stone, ovolo-moulded chimneypiece with a four-centred head on the uphill wall.

To the rear of the main range is a detached Ty bach with a stone monopitch roof.
