Description
Hafod y Cwm is a small former farmhouse, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of whitewashed rubble with a slate roof and brick end stacks. The building has two storeys and a two-window front. The central doorway has a slate lintel and a boarded door with vertical ribs and a glazed panel. Flanking the doorway are four-pane horizontally sliding sash windows with brick sills and segmental heads, likely inserted during 19th-century improvements. A smaller pantry window is situated to the right, potentially in the location of a former doorway. Upper windows beneath the eaves are modern casements set within earlier openings, and also have brick sills. A distinct line in the stonework below these windows suggests an earlier eaves height, and the present roof and chimneys were likely built as part of work undertaken by the Pen Bedw estate. A lean-to extends from the left gable end; this has been modified from an original lofted bake-house/brewhouse and features a half-glazed door and window set within earlier openings with brick segmental heads. A modern conservatory is attached to the right-hand gable, and lean-to and conservatory additions extend along the rear wall, which was originally built into the bank.
The house retains its original two-unit plan. The central doorway opens into the larger room on the right, which contains heavy, roughly chamfered lateral beams with plain joists, a timber lintel over the deep fireplace, and remnants of a bread oven to the rear. A small pantry, with a boarded door with slats above, is located alongside the fireplace. A staircase, likely inserted around 1870, runs between the two rooms from the rear. The room to the left was formerly a dairy or back kitchen and retains a slate slab. Within the brewhouse beyond, the domed bread oven and copper boiler are still intact.
