Description
The Royal Oak Public House is a late Georgian building featuring retained railings at the roadside. It stands two storeys high with a slate roof and has a whitewashed front that is divided into one and three bays, stepping forward at the junction of two ranges. The broad left bay has been raised in brick, and there is a painted plinth. The building mostly has small-pane sash windows, including a 9-pane camber-headed window on the lower left of the first floor and twinned 9-pane windows on both floors to the right. The entrance features a shouldered architrave and a six-panel door, with a metal fire insurance plaque positioned above it.
The right gable end is exposed brick with a later lean-to addition, and it has cambered voussoirs; the upper window has been bricked up, and there is a chimney breast on the left gable end. The side elevation, which steps down, has two windows from an earlier range with twinned small-pane sashes and a modern porch. The rear of the building has similar architectural details. To the left, there is a rubble wall that has been raised in brick, which screens the forecourt.
Inside, the building retains a full cruck truss with feet at a lower floor level.
