Description
Abbey House is a Reformed Church built in the early 19th century, as indicated on an 1833 map. The building is two stories tall and features a three-window front made of pebbledash, with cemented quoins, a plinth, and window surrounds. It has a hipped asbestos slate roof topped with a pebbledash chimney stack. The windows are 12-pane sashes with lugged architraves. The entrance has a broad surround, although the porch has been removed. It features a round arched entrance flanked by fluted pilasters, with a door that has six octagonal panels and a traceried fanlight above. On the left side, there are two windows above one window, all with 12-pane sashes, along with an inserted modern window. There is an added bay on the left and a chimney breast on the right gable end.
Inside, the building has six-panel doors, with the ground floor doors featuring octagonal panels. These rooms were previously used as offices and laboratories for the nearby Abbey Paper Mills. The land drops away steeply to the left down to the Holywell Stream.
