Description
The Mount is a building likely dating from the early to mid 19th century, believed to have served as the Gardener's Cottage for the nearby Glyn Abbott. It is set back from the road on a hill, opposite the junction with Wood Lane. The structure features two storeys and an unusual octagonal block located at the northern corner, which is part of a larger square block formed by mostly modern additions at the rear.
The octagonal section has sides of unequal width and is constructed from coursed rubble, complete with a plinth, a band course between the floors, and an advanced parapet that is said to be crenellated but is currently hidden behind modern eaves boarding. It has a polygonal slate roof and an octagonal stone chimney stack. The windows, some of which are casement, are set in splayed recesses. The first-floor windows include 3 and 6-pane designs, some featuring mullions, while the ground floor has 3 and 9-pane windows, with the wider ones placed alternately.
A round-arched doorway on the northeast side features a 6-panel door and a 5-pane fanlight. There is also a modernized block with pebbledash that has a rubble plinth and retains a small-pane casement. The southeast side includes a gable and porch, with a gabled south end. The Mount is listed for its unique architectural features and its historical connections to Glyn Abbott.
