Description
Glyn Abbot is an early to mid 19th century Classical villa, likely built in the 1830s, set in its own grounds on an elevated site. It faces south across a terraced forecourt and is located near the eastern boundary of the Community Council area, approximately midway between the town centre and the coast road A 548. There is a converted stone lodge at the entry of the uphill drive.
The villa is a two-storey building with a dignified and symmetrical three-bay stucco front, featuring a pediment treatment on the advanced outer bays. It has a hipped slate roof with rendered brick chimney stacks. The first floor has 9-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features small-pane tripartite camber-headed windows. There is a sill band and a plinth. A central trellised porch with panelled double doors provides the main entrance. Small-pane sash windows are also present on the sides of the building, and it steps back at the rear with a secondary entrance on the east side.
Inside, the main entrance leads to a deep entrance hall with an open stairwell beyond. The interiors are reported to retain well-preserved contemporary details, although they were not accessible during inspections in 1990. Glyn Abbot is listed as a fine local example of a Classical small country house.
