Description
Hendre is a former farmhouse that dates back to the 18th century. It is a two-storey house constructed of brickwork with slate roofs and brick chimneys. The front (south) elevation features Flemish Bond brickwork, while the sides and rear are built in English Garden Wall Bond. The eaves and verges have a modest roof projection with plain bargeboards.
The main (south) elevation has a triple-gabled design, with symmetrical outer gables and a narrow middle gable that projects forward. The central main door has six panels, pilasters, consoles, and a cornice, topped with a plain overlight. Above the door is a 12-pane hornless sash window, and the outer bays feature similar windows with 16 panes, both above and below.
At the rear, the range projects slightly to the east. An early chimney, made of mixed rubble stonework and heightened in brickwork to two storeys, is incorporated into the east gable end of the rear range. The rear elevation is irregular, featuring a boarded door beneath a bracketed slated lean-to hood. Three of the four upper windows have horizontally sliding sashes, while there is one mullion and transom window below with a horizontally sliding sash. There is a long, lower-roofed 19th-century extension at the west, which has upper windows with mullions and transoms close to the eaves, also with sliding sashes. The lower windows have brick-arched heads.
In the south-west corner, there is a modern conservatory with a brick plinth. Tall boundary walls are present to the north, and there is a detached washhouse against the west side.
The interior has been modernised but is said to retain some timber lintels and beams, including bressummers over wide fireplaces in the dining room and bothy, as well as slate flagstones. The Adam-style chimney-place in the front living room has been repositioned.
