Description

21 Bridge Street is an early 18th-century building that consists of a pair of three-storey structures with two-window painted black fronts, and part of the ground floor is made of rubble. The roofs are slate, featuring boarded eaves and cement render end chimney stacks. The building has deep cill bands, rubble quoins, and a plinth. The first floor has small pane casement windows with lintels and fluted keystones. No 21 has a modern shop front, while No 23 features an early 19th-century Regency front, which includes a fascia that bows out over two four-pane shop windows, a central half-glazed door, and an overlight. Between the two shops, there is a four-panel door marked with the number 23.

The left end of the building is made of rubble and includes a cross range with one stone dated 1883. There is also a further rubble chimney stack and one small window, along with a very tall cellar. At the rear, there are small sash windows with brace plates, a broken loading platform, and a hoist, indicating that the building was previously used for commercial purposes.

Inside No 21, the interior features a dog-leg staircase with a fluted newel post, a moulded handrail, and turned balusters; the upper flight of the staircase appears to be slightly older. There are some half-timber partition walls and a roll-moulded cross beam in the rear parlour. The first floor includes six-panel doors and a good 19th-century iron firegrate.
