Description
Saint Patrick’s Dormitory Block at Howell's School is part of a group of three school houses located in a prominent position above the main building. The buildings exhibit a strong symmetrical design, each arranged in a symmetrical manner. They feature a free interpretation of Tudor Gothic architecture, simplified in a modernist style. The structure is rendered, likely over concrete, with stone dressings and green slate roofs.
The dormitory block is three storeys high, with the entrance elevation symmetrically designed around a central gable. This elevation is arranged in a pattern of one, three, one, three, one, three, one bays. The central gable contains the entrance, which features a round-arched door flanked by sidelights, all set within a broken pediment that displays a relief of the patron saint. Narrow flanking windows create an overall tripartite composition, which is repeated on the upper floors where there are central two-light windows.
Narrow single-window bays frame the main flanking sections, which include balconies on the first and second floors with plain balustrades. The windows consist of three sets of eight panes with top opening lights. The ground floor features French windows designed in a Diocletian style. There is a three-bay return elevation arranged in a one-two-one pattern, leading to a flat-roofed rear wing that maintains similar, albeit simpler, detailing. The building has not been fully inspected during the resurvey.
