Description

Denbigh Conservative Club (Former Constitutional Club)

A two-and-a-half storey building of irregular triangular plan, built in 1891 in simple municipal Gothic style. The structure is constructed of red brick with terracotta detailing, raised on a snecked, quarry-faced stone plinth at its narrow eastern end. The roof is medium-pitched slate with tiled ridges and hipped ends.

The asymmetrical south elevation follows the gentle upward incline of Highgate. A large pointed-arched entrance with stopped and moulded label contains recessed, plain panelled doors and an overlight. Above this is a pointed-arched moulded niche with an ogee moulded label terminating in a foliated finial, within which sits a foliate relief carving bearing the date 1891. A gabled lateral chimney rises above this feature, though its stack has been lost. To the right are two narrow ground-floor windows with shouldered arches and chamfered jambs, with a shallow oriel projection above containing three similar squat windows. This oriel is carried on three decorative corbels with segmentally-arched spans and is topped by a dentilated cornice with a surmounting crenellated parapet.

To the left of the entrance is a pair of small windows with tall paired windows above, all plain sashes. Further left is a shouldered-arched entrance with boarded door and additional pairs of sashes on both floors. At the far left is another similar entrance with a large segmental basement light to its right and two tall shouldered-arched windows above. This left-hand section features a dentilated cornice and a central staged chimney with chamfered ends and moulded upper courses.

The narrow east-facing gabled end has a parapet with terracotta capping, returned around the sides and sloped up on the Highgate side. The stone plinth section displays a rounded projection advancing in front of the gable, topped with decorative railings and containing three rectangular windows with stopped-chamfered jambs. The principal raised ground floor has a shouldered-arched entrance with three-quarter glazed doors and leaded overlight. Above this is a chamfered rectangular niche housing a modern sign, with a moulded stringcourse rising above and returning onto both side elevations, terminating at the oriel on the south side. Paired shouldered sashes occupy the space above, with a blind trefoil in the gable apex.

The Portland Place elevation features three simple modernised shop fronts on the ground floor, stepping down sequentially with the road's downward incline. Moulded brackets support a modernised fascia with moulded and dentilated cornice above. The first floor contains two groups of three vertical shouldered-arched windows with sashes and leaded upper lights, set on projecting sills. To the right is a further pair of similar windows in a flush end bay with a stepped-down eaves line. A bracketed cornice decoration surmounts a terracotta frieze bearing 'Constitutional Club' in raised letters. The roof is fitted with two pairs of modern hipped dormers with plain wooden casement glazing.

The interior was not inspected at the time of survey.
