Description

Dee Mill is a three-storey building constructed from rubble with freestone quoins, featuring a slate roof, a red brick chimney stack, and a tiled ridge. The building has a roughly L-shaped plan. The front, which faces Dee Lane, has two windows; to the left are Victorian casements with red brick dressings, while the right side has modern windows. There is a stable door entrance on the left.

The other range of the mill projects forward at a right angle and has a one-window elevation facing east up Dee Lane, featuring three-light windows and a datestone on the first floor. Below this, to the left, is a modern opening. The tall and broad gable end to the left faces up Greenfield and includes a four-pane window at the top and a deep window below, which was formerly a loading door, as indicated by the worn stone cill and a four-pane overlight.

The left side of the building is finished in pebbledash and has brace plates with two doors near water level. There is a covered walkway and a lower later range to the left behind the weir. The right gable end is also pebbledash and features an attached single-storey corrugated iron range with sash windows. The cross range at the rear projects slightly and has a one-window elevation. The mill was formerly topped with a large chimney stack, as shown in old photographs.

Internally, the ground floor features sturdy timber piers arranged in a semicircle to support the heavy machinery that was once above, near the waterwheel. The timber undershot wheel is encased within the building. The drive shafts and pulleys are still in place, along with a crane on the top attic floor, which has a two-bay king post roof and a piece of machine-sawn timber dated 1207, complete with carpenter's marks.
