Description

The group of four mausolea at the Church of St Sadwrn consists of vault structures, including a main mausoleum of pyramidal design, arranged in sequence down a gently sloping ground from left to right. All are constructed from limestone. The first mausoleum, on the left, is dedicated to George Naylor Esq. of Plas-yn-Green, who died in 1831. It takes the form of a fielded-panelled chest tomb set on a square plinth of tooled stone, which formerly had enclosing railings. It features paired side panels and a single end panel, with a moulded base and top. The second tomb is similar in design, with a depressed pyramidal top, and is dedicated to William Davies Roberts of Plas-yn-Green, who died in 1869, Dorothy Roberts, who died in 1863, and the Rev. John Roberts, who died in 1866.

The main mausoleum is a large early 19th-century vault for the Heaton family of Plas Heaton, inscribed with the name of John Heaton. This structure is square and made of dressed limestone blocks, topped with a shallow pyramidal stone roof above a moulded cornice. Each face of the cornice has an inset stone tablet, although the inscriptions are mostly indistinct. The front features two shallow rectangular recesses in the lower section. Adjacent to this is an extension of the Heaton vault, dating from around 1902, which includes a simple stone Celtic cross within a square grassed enclosure, bordered by low parapet walls at the front and right return.
