Description
Southcroft, including North Cottage, is a symmetrical two-storey building with a three-window whitewashed brick front. It features an advanced and gabled central bay with flush bargeboards and a green slate roof, complemented by end brick chimney stacks and lion heads on the guttering. The first floor has 16-pane nearly flush sash windows, with a blind segmental head in the center that may have once had a fanlight. Below, there are modern casements. A richly carved hood with brackets covers the recessed half-glazed door entrance.
The former North Cottage, now part of the property, extends forward to the right and has a brick front with a hipped roof at the left end. It features a flush frame 9-pane sash window above a recessed half-glazed door, with modern French windows to the right.
The main right gable end has a flat parapet connecting the twin gable ends of the parallel ranges. There is a splayed two-storey bay window to the right with small pane sash glazing, and a tripartite sash window to the left that includes a fine traceried fanlight in the Adamesque style, which has been reused. The symmetrical two-storey, three-window brick rear of Southcroft has a raised gable in the central advanced bay and a splayed oriel over the entrance, with small pane sash windows. The north wall of North Cottage is blank.
Inside, the property features a particularly fine drawing room located longitudinally at the rear of the main entrance, showcasing an Adamesque cornice, a ceiling rose, and a foliage border, along with a panelled dado. A segmented arch with pilasters opens into the bay, with similar arches on either side of the fireplace, one of which has been infilled. The kitchens are stepped down to the rear and have pointed arched openings. One window pane at the front is inscribed with "Hughes 1814." The tall main room to the right retains a fluted cornice, dado, picture rails, and panelled reveals, while the dining room features chamfered beams. The right-hand entrance hall retains a staircase that has been reversed.
