Description

Tan-y-Graig is a large three-storey Georgian townhouse, constructed with roughcast over brick and rubble, featuring late 19th-century plaster quoins and architraves around most openings. The building has a hipped slate roof with two squat central chimneys made of stuccoed brick. Its facade is asymmetrical with four bays, and the entrance is located in the third bay from the left. At the time of the survey, the entrance had a boarded-up door with a rectangular, marginally-glazed overlight above it. Flanking the entrance are two large rectangular bay windows supported by wooden pilasters, which carry entablatures with modillion cornices; both bay windows were also boarded at the time of inspection. To the left of these are two smaller windows, which were similarly boarded. The first and second floors feature elegant 12- and 9-pane sash windows, all unhorned, near-flush, and with cambered heads. They have lugged stucco surrounds with projecting keys and bracketed sills. The right gable end has similar 12-pane windows on the ground and first floors, with an additional 9-pane sash on the top floor.

Adjoining to the left of the main building is a low two-storey, two-bay service block that is rendered and slated. It has an entrance on the right and plain windows, with simple plaster surrounds; these openings were also boarded at the time of inspection.

In front of the main building, there is a small forecourt enclosed by a well-crafted late 19th-century terracotta balustrade. This balustrade features bulbous turned balusters with a moulded rail on a moulded plinth, and includes square gate piers on the right, with a curved end section beyond. The right-hand pier has a collar for a former ball finial, while the left one is missing its finial.

The interior of the building was not inspected during the survey.
