Description
Nos. 15-23 Chapel Street form a curving terrace of five cottages, built in the mid-19th century with a brick facade on an earlier core of limestone rubble. The cottages have steeply pitched slate roofs, brick chimneys in the centre, and a flush gable chimney on the left-hand side. The central cottage (No. 19) is larger and has a double-fronted design, with pairs of single-window cottages flanking it on either side; the end cottages have entrances on the outside. The central cottage fronts slightly outwards, following the curve of the lane. Nos. 19 and 23 retain original 12-pane sashes on both floors, while No. 23 also has two original 12-pane sashes and two 9-pane sashes to the first and ground floors of its gable end. Nos. 15 and 17 have later 19th-century plain sashes, and No. 21 has 20th-century steel-framed casements. All ground floor windows have cambered heads, and stone sills project outwards. Six-panel doors are present in all cottages except No. 17, which has a modern, part-glazed door; each door has a plain segmental overlight. A rear cross-wing, level with the gable end, is attached to No. 23. The interior of the cottages was not inspected.
