Description
23 Chapel Street is part of a curving terrace of five cottages built in the mid-19th century. The cottages feature a brick facade that covers an earlier limestone rubble core. They have a continuous steeply-pitched slate roof with plain brick chimneys in the center and a flush gable chimney on the left side.
The terrace includes a central double-fronted unit, No. 19, flanked by one-window pairs on each side, with the end units having entrances on the outside. The central unit has a slightly convex front, following the curve of the lane. Nos 19 and 23 retain their unhorned 12-pane sash windows on both floors. No. 23 also features two original 12-pane sashes and two 9-pane sashes on the first and ground floors of its gable end. Nos 15 and 17 have later 19th-century plain sash windows, while No. 21 has 20th-century steel-framed casements. All windows have cambered heads and projecting stone sills. The doors are six-panel, except for No. 17, which has a modern part-glazed door, and all have plain segmental overlights. There is a rear cross-wing that is flush with the gable end of No. 23.
The interior was not inspected during the survey.
