Description
Blaen y Cwm Farmhouse is a symmetrical two-storey house built from rubble stone and topped with a slate roof featuring blue brick end stacks. In some areas, a rough boulder plinth is visible. The central entrance is flanked by groups of three windows on either side. The doorway has a renewed half-glazed panelled door set beneath a brick arched head, with narrow small-pane sidelights. The other windows are 12-paned horned sashes, with the lower storey featuring cambered heads made of narrow stone voussoirs, while the upper storey has flat heads with rendered surrounds. A rough string course runs along the first-floor level. Centrally located on the upper storey is a decorative slate tablet that reads 'JL 1728'. The roof has a central skylight.
On the north gable end, there is a former doorway that has been blocked with stone, offset to the left, and a small four-pane window to the right. To the right, there is a lower rear wing, likely built in the late 19th century, which features a renewed half-glazed panelled door with an overlight to the left, a two-light casement window to the right, and a similar casement above, all with red brick surrounds. Above the door, there is a slate tablet that reads 'M 1978'. The south gable end is roughcast, with a door similar to the others on the left, renewed casement windows above, and to the right. To the left, there is an additional rear wing added around 1950. The rear elevation is set into a bank and is not visible.
At the time of inspection, there was no access to the interior. However, it was recorded in 1994 that the house is designed with two principal rooms on either side of a wide central hallway. One side of the hallway features an exposed timber-framed partition wall. The principal room has a massive projecting fireplace with a roughly chamfered bressumer. Both main rooms contain two spine beams that are chamfered with run-out stops, and the roof is supported by halved and pinned A-frame trusses.
