Description

Gwunn Davies, Butchers is a three-storey building with a four-window red brick front, topped with a slate roof and a large red brick chimney stack. It features four-pane sash windows, with two splayed bays on the first floor flanking an impressive wrought iron overthrow and insignia adorned with radiating spearhead finials above the shop front. The letters "ES" represent Edwards and Son. The shop front fascia spans the full width of the building, including over the carriage entry to the left, and overlaps with No 21 to the right. It has an anthemion bracketed fascia, round-topped pinnacles above the brackets with white painted foliage carving, and polished granite pilasters below. There is detailed scrolled ironwork over the carriage entry. The main shop front is centrally located, featuring frosted glass and ironwork panels, with a large four-pane sash window in the middle. The cornice continues to the right over Ecclestons, the adjoining shop, which has a modern window.

Inside the passage, there is a door leading to No 19A, and the rear of the building is partially pebbledashed with small pane sash windows.

Historically, when the shop operated as Edwards and Son butchers, it supplied meat across the UK, including to Neville Chamberlain during his time as Prime Minister.
