Description
55 Vale Street is an elegant three-storey Georgian townhouse that is part of a terrace. It is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond with painted sandstone quoins and features a slate roof with two brick chimneys. The facade has four bays, with an additional narrow bay on the far left that formerly had a passage leading to the rear; this has been reduced and now contains a modern small-pane window.
The central entrance boasts a wooden doorcase with panelled pilasters and reveals, topped with a moulded pediment. It features a six-panel fielded door and a rectangular overlight with marginal glazing. The ground and first floors of the main entrance-flanking bays have Venetian-type wooden windows. The windows on the right are primary and have arched central sections with narrow flanking sections within an overall segmentally-arched opening. The left side windows are similar but are set within an advanced rectangular storeyed bay and have square heads. All windows have sash glazing, with intersecting glazing bars on the central arched heads. The storeyed bay window is adorned with moulded stucco cornicing between the ground and first floors and along its flat roof. The remaining windows are 12-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows featuring cambered heads and projecting stone sills throughout. The bay on the far right has a large carriage arch at the ground floor, providing access to the rear, with a segmental head.
The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey.
