Description

Swayne Johnson & Wight Solicitors Offices is an elegant two-and-a-half storey, three-bay townhouse built of red brick with sandstone quoins, standing on a tall rubble plinth. The roof is slated, featuring kneelered and slab-coped gable parapets, as well as oversailing eaves with a modillion cornice. The reduced end chimneys have rebuilt upper sections and an off-set dentil-course.

The symmetrical facade includes a central entrance leading to a raised ground floor via four stone steps. This entrance features a Georgian pilastered doorcase with an open pediment, a recessed multi-pane glazed door with panelled reveals, and a segmental Gothick fanlight with intersecting glazing bars. On either side of the entrance are two Venetian windows, each with a central 12-pane unhorned sash section, arched intersecting heads, and narrow four-bay flanking sections. Above the entrance is an elegant 15-pane unhorned sash, flanked by tripartite windows that have similar central and narrow five-pane outer sections. The attic floor has two hipped dormers with plain four-pane casements, while the left gable end is rendered and its upper section is tile-hung.

Inside, there is a very fine late 17th-century full-height oak well stair featuring spiral balusters, a moulded string, and square, flat-capped newels. The ground floor left room has contemporary large-field panelling with a moulded cornice and ribbed plasterwork decoration on the ceiling, including a foliated circular centerpiece. Additionally, there are two-panel fielded doors and stopped-chamfered beams with ogee stops. Some timber-framed partitioning is visible on the upper floor.
