Description
Fferm Farmhouse is a 2-storey building with a 2-window range, constructed from limestone rubble that is heavily rendered, topped with an old slate roof and featuring a gable end stack. The south-facing front originally had a central doorway, which has been converted into a window, along with two windows on each floor. Before around 1990, the first-floor windows were small-paned horizontally sliding sashes, while the ground floor had small-paned sashes. These have now been replaced with casements that have minimal glazing bars. There is a small window next to the chimney on the east gable end. To the west of the original section, there is either a late 20th-century reconstruction or extension, which is also rendered and has slate roofs, but features modern details.
Inside, the original part of the house consists of a large room that includes a massive fireplace with a cambered bressumer at the gable end. It has heavy chamfered lateral beams, including one against the wall opposite the fireplace, and chamfered joists. One of the beams is inscribed with the raised letters "Anno Domini 1593. 5555," with the latter thought to represent an anno mundi date. There is a beam that shows evidence of slots for a former partition, possibly indicating a secondary subdivision. During building work, evidence of a doorway alongside the chimney was discovered. The staircase that was mentioned in earlier descriptions was located in the southwest corner of the main room but was removed around 1993. Upstairs, a single roof truss has been exposed; it was originally a tie-beam truss with raking struts and a collar, but at some point, the tie-beam was cut through and one of the struts was replaced, indicating that the building has been raised in height.
