Description
Pengwern Hall, also known as Pengwern College, is a stuccoed mansion painted cream with darker cream dressings. The walls are believed to be stone with a brick facing, and it features low-pitched slate roofs that are concealed behind parapets, along with numerous brick chimneys. Despite some losses, much of the original structure remains intact.
The main block, which faces south, is three stories high and has a window arrangement of 1+3+1. It features a three-bay pediment supported by giant Ionic pilasters and a rusticated ground floor. The left side of the main block retains three stories, with the top story being a dummy and the second story showcasing a Palladian window. However, the right side has been reduced to a single story. To the left of the main block is a canted two-story wing with three windows, while to the right is a similar wing that has been reduced to one story. The building generally has twelve-pane sash windows, with restored six-pane windows in the top story.
The rear (north) elevation also has a three-story main block with a pedimented center, flanks, and wings, which are irregularly fenestrated but still retain many sash windows. The right wing is two stories high, featuring Palladian windows both above and below.
The west elevation is also pedimented at the center and retains three sash windows above and one below. The east side of the building is irregular and ends with a group of single-story outbuildings that face the approach drive to the Hall.
Inside, there is a large entrance hall with a staircase at the rear that rises from right to left against the rear wall, featuring a decorative iron balustrade that likely dates from after the fire of 1864. The front and rear rooms of the west wing have original plaster cornices, and the front room includes an Adamesque central ceiling feature.
