Description

Faenol Fawr is a manor house range dating from the 18th century, with shorter forward wings of similar height to the east. It is constructed from locally sourced limestone, with larger quoins, and has a restored slate roof. The forward wings feature prominent stepped gables, and a smaller stepped gable sits centrally above the main hall range. The ground floor windows are three-light mullion and transom windows – one in each wing and two in the middle range – with a main door on the left side of the middle range, bearing the inscription "17 vive, ut vivas 25" carved into its architrave. The ground floor openings are embellished with friezes and cornices. The first floor has twelve-pane hornless sash windows with exposed frames; two in each wing and three in the middle range. Second-floor windows in the wings are three-light mullion windows, while the central gable has two sash windows similar to those on the first floor. A torus moulding runs beneath these second-floor windows, continuing around the house but absent from the front of the forward wings.

Large chimneys are present on the south and north elevations. The south chimney projects, featuring a small stepped gable to its left and right, while the north chimney has a stepped gable to its right only. These gables both incorporate mullion and transom windows. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with a stepped gable corresponding to each front wing, and a larger stepped gable on the central rear wing, alongside a smaller dormer gable with a walled-up window on the south side. A lower section of the central rear wing is constructed from 17th-century brickwork and connects to a contemporary stone dovecote. A large modern glazed sunroom has been added to the south of the rear wing.

The house has been considerably extended to the north for hotel accommodation and is now connected to a former farmhouse. The hotel entrance is located within this extension.

The central room contains two staircases leading to the rear, with a dining room to the south and a sitting room to the north. The dining room is the most notable space, featuring small-panel wainscot and a restored fireplace. The overmantel displays emblazoned shields and the inscription "I LL M LL A D 1597," referencing John and Margaret Lloyd, along with extensive strapwork and bulbous pilasters. A kitchen fireplace has a voussoir arch inscribed with the dates 1690 and 1770.

The main 18th-century staircase, accessed via a panelled archway at the rear, has turned bulbous balusters, a heavily moulded rail, and a close string. A second staircase to the north is potentially original, with square moulded balusters tapering downwards, panelled square newels with finials.

The house is said to contain panelled bedrooms incorporating Tudor and Georgian detailing, alongside good quality fireplaces.
