Description
Aberkinsey Farmhouse is a two-storey building constructed of roughly coursed and squared stone, topped with slate roofs and featuring end and side wall stacks. The main range has two units, a short parallel rear range, and gabled rear wings. The south elevation includes a central entrance framed by an architrave with moulded jambs and an entablature. On either side of the entrance are 16-pane sash windows set in moulded stone architraves. The upper windows have been replaced with modern casements, and there are modern dormer gables above the outer windows. An inserted window is present in the west gable return and in the rear wing, which retains what may be a fire-window to the right of the ground floor. An added lean-to entrance lobby is located at the angle of the main and rear ranges to the east, featuring a shallow segmental archway leading to the door, which has been re-sited from another building.
The rear elevation displays two wide original gabled wings towards the west and a narrower gable, possibly over the staircase, to the east. There are 2-light mullioned windows and a similar blocked window visible in the wider gables. Additional wings to the north of these were likely added in the 19th century and feature brick dressings on the windows.
The original two-unit plan of the south range has been modified by the creation of a central hallway, probably in the early 19th century. The eastern room retains a pair of heavy spine beams with angular stops to the chamfer, while similar axial beams are found in the western room. A bressumer over the fireplace in the eastern room is dated 1890 and carries a crest, said to be that of the Creve-Coeur family, although it is not in its original position. The central rear wing once served as a dairy, featuring slate slab benches.
