Description
Saint Mary's Well is a well-house and water tank or bath, built around 1612. The structure is entirely made of stone and features an octagonal shape. Each side consists of a panelled slab, with a round-arched doorway facing east and an oculus on the facade at the other three cardinal points. The roof is also octagonal and topped with a stone cupola that has a pelican finial. Inside, there is a shallow octagonal basin set into the floor, along with curved stone benches that project from each face. A shallow stone conduit connects the well-house to the water tank. The rectangular bath or tank is partly sunk below ground level and has a solid panelled stone balustrade with panelled corner pilasters, which are topped with masked urns that are replicas of the originals made in 1972. Steps lead into the water at the southeast inner side.
