Description

The Sunday School at Capel Carmel is a single-storey former school building dating from the 19th century. It features scribed roughcast front walls and rubble-stone side walls, topped with a slate roof that has a coped gable at the front, complete with an ironwork apex finial. The front façade is slightly recessed between rusticated quoin strips and has a slightly projecting verge. It originally had three stepped round-headed windows, with the central window being wider, all set on a single corbelled sill. These windows have round arches and faceted keys, similar to those found in the main chapel, but they have been blocked since the last survey in 1975.

On the left side wall, there are 16-pane hornless sash windows under segmental heads with dressed voussoirs, arranged in a three-window pattern. At the rear end of the building, there is a porch with a single-pitch roof that is at right angles to the main structure. This porch is attached to the main chapel and features a panel door on the right and a 2-pane horned sash window on the left, both situated beneath large stone lintels. The right side wall has a similar arrangement of five windows as the left side.

The forecourt is elevated above a rubble-stone retaining wall with freestone coping. On the left side of the forecourt, there are two square hammer-dressed gate piers topped with pyramid caps, which support double cast iron gates.

Inside, the building has a five-bay collar-beam roof that is ceiled at collar-beam level.
