Description
St John's Church House is a building constructed from buff brick, featuring cable moulded string courses and concrete tiled and flat roofs behind parapets. The main hall has a flat roof and a splayed plan, with a stepped fly tower at its narrowest end, blindwalled aisles, and clerestory windows. The fly tower is capped with a deep band of rusticated brickwork that forms a frieze. The curved inner wall at the wider end of the hall mirrors the curve of the gabled frontage, which contains meeting and service rooms, as well as the main entrance accessed through a recessed carved splayed porch. The doorway features hollow chamfered brick moulding to the arch, with a cable moulded cornice and parapet above. The flanking windows, all metal casements with leaded lights and splayed brick heads, are grouped in pairs and quartets. The gabled range ends with flat-roofed blocks, which have narrow windows set in slightly sunk openings.
Inside, the building is characterized by exposed, slightly glazed brick used for dressings. The main hall's splayed plan includes a curved end wall, with an outer corridor running between the hall and smaller meeting and service rooms. The aisles on either side of the hall are raised above the floor level, and the arcade features flat arches supported by plain piers with unmoulded chamfered brackets at the corners. A stage is located at the narrower end of the hall, and the curved rear wall has a series of 'porthole' windows that open from the flanking corridor. The meeting rooms on the opposite side of this corridor have simple exposed brick fireplaces, one of which includes inset blue and white tiles.
