Description
Nos 407 and 409 Abergele Road are part of a group of buildings that includes Nos 399-425 Abergele Road and 1 Princess Road in Old Colwyn. This group features a large corner building at Nos 417-425, which was likely the first constructed, originally serving as a single shop with living space. It now consists of a terrace of six shops with accommodation above, which has been subdivided into two shops with accommodation. The terrace of six shops is stepped down to accommodate the sloping site. The buildings are made of rock-faced coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs that have red tiled cresting. Nos 417-425 feature stone axial stacks, while the adjoining terrace has brick end wall stacks.
The section from Nos 399-415 consists of six shops, each highlighted by a crow-stepped main gable and a smaller gable over a subsidiary bay. The ground floor shop fronts have mostly been renewed, but pavement canopies remain at Nos 413 and 415. Each main gable has timber canted oriel windows on the first floor with slate roofs, and both main and lesser gables have 2-pane sash windows on each floor. The main gables also feature 2-pane sash windows in their apexes.
