Description
Nos 399-425 Abergele Road and 1 Princess Road in Old Colwyn form a notable group of buildings. The large structure at the corner of Princess Road (Nos 417-425) is likely the earliest, originally designed as a single shop with living space. It is now part of a terrace of six shops, which has been subdivided into two shops with accommodation above. The terrace of six shops adjacent to it is stepped down due to the sloping site. The buildings are constructed from rock-faced coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs featuring red tiled cresting. Nos 417-425 have stone axial stacks, while the adjoining terrace has brick end wall stacks.
Nos 399-415 consist of six shops, each distinctively highlighted by a crow-stepped main gable, with a smaller gable above a subsidiary bay. Although the ground floor shop fronts have largely been renewed, pavement canopies remain at Nos 413 and 415. Each main gable features timber canted oriel windows on the first floor, covered by slate roofs, along with 2-pane sash windows on each floor in the smaller gables. The main gables also include 2-pane sash windows in their apexes.
