Description
Nos 399-425 Abergele Road, along with 1 Princess Road in Old Colwyn, form a notable group of buildings. The large structure on the corner of Princess Road, consisting of Nos 417-425, is likely the earliest built, originally serving as a single shop with living space above. This building is part of a terrace of six shops with accommodation, which has since been subdivided into two shops and living quarters. The terrace steps down the sloping site and is constructed of rock-faced coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs featuring red tiled cresting. Nos 417-425 have stone axial stacks, while the adjoining terrace has brick end wall stacks.
Nos 399-415 feature six shops, each distinctively highlighted by a crow-stepped main gable, accompanied by a smaller gable over a subsidiary bay. Although the ground floor shop fronts have mostly been renewed, pavement canopies remain at Nos 413 and 415. Each main gable has timber canted oriel windows on the first floor, covered by slate roofs, and both the main and lesser gables feature 2-pane sash windows on each floor, with additional 2-pane sash windows in the apexes of the main gables.
