Description

This is a primary barn with a smaller cart shed attached to the northeast side of Plas Buckley. The barn dates to the 18th century and is timber-framed, built on a high rubble stone plinth. Much of the southeast side of the barn is clad in rubble stone, while the upper section of the northwest side features open box framing. The steep roof is now covered with corrugated iron but was originally thatched; the northeast gable shows exposed timber framing near the apex. There is a large, stepped entrance on both the southeast and northwest sides of the barn.

The cart shed, which is lower than the barn, is built of rubble and has a slated roof with a tiled ridge. It has two large, plain cart entrances on the southeast side, each with a timber lintel above. Above each entrance is a two-light mullioned window set under the eaves. A dovecot, containing ten nest boxes arranged in two tiers, is centrally positioned above these windows. A stone staircase provides external access to an upper entrance at the northeast gable, which has a boarded door.

The main barn section consists of two and a half bays. The first two bays are spanned by a large, full cruck truss that has sharply-elbowed arms. A plain, straight wind-brace is visible on one of the lower purlins, with evidence of mortising for others on two tiers, although these are now lost. The second truss is of the collar and tie-beam type.
