Description

The L-shaped agricultural range at Berain is a notable structure dating from the 17th century. The central section features a large, 7-bay box-framed barn with rubble lower walls and end bays, while the northeast gable is constructed of breeze block and topped with a corrugated iron roof. The upper wall sides display some old horizontal weatherboarding, particularly on the northeast side, while the northwest side has been partially encased in brick during the second quarter of the 18th century.

On the northeast side, facing the farmyard, there is a large entrance at the far left with an old pegged oak frame, accompanied by a slit light with limestone reveals to the left. The center has two additional entrances with modern boarded doors, and to the right is another large entrance featuring a stable door. Adjacent to this is a modern brick lean-to addition that projects forward to the southeast.

Connecting at right angles to the southeast is the byre range, built of rubble with a renewed slated roof and a rubble gable parapet on the northwest gable. The farmyard side has a raised rubble platform in front, with stepped access to the left that continues along the side of the primary barn, descending as a ramp. The byre range contains five openings, all of which were formerly entrances; only those in bays two and four remain unaltered, featuring boarded doors with exposed lintels. The other openings have been modified to accommodate modern steel-framed windows.

Attached to the northeast gable of the primary barn, and set back slightly, is a lower 4-bay rubble range topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. This section includes an entrance on the far left with a sliding door and several blocked openings on the right, as well as four round oculi in the upper wall, framed with brick voussoirs.

The primary barn's structure consists of 7 bays supported by braced tie-beam trusses and massive wall posts, which are braced to the latter. The trusses in the northern bays noticeably lean inward, although they are braced longitudinally from each preceding tie beam with modern timbers. The later 17th-century block retains an original 5-bay roof with braced collar trusses made of pegged oak.
