Description

The L-shaped agricultural range at Ty'n-y-Ffrith dates from the 19th century and consists of a large primary barn set into the slope of the hill, with a later adjoining carthouse and stable block to the southeast. The building is constructed of rubble and features a renewed, graded small-slate roof.

The barn has opposing entrances at the upper end, with ventilation slits flanking both long sides. On the northwest side, there is an upper pegged-framed open window to the left of the entrance, along with a boarded window opening further to the left; all have exposed timber lintels. The lower bay, located at the foot of the hillslope, includes a basement stable accessed through a central ground-floor entrance in the gable. This entrance features an old 19th-century folding boarded door with a contemporary frame that is heavily enriched with graffiti. Flanking the entrance are two small square lights with contemporary pegged frames, bird bars, and inner shutters.

Adjoining at right angles to the left is the two-storey stable and cart section, which has two large cart bays on the far left and a stable entrance with a boarded door on the right. In the center, there is a small, plain, open window. The upper floor features three 2-light windows with plain wooden mullions, bird bars, and pegged frames. There is external stone-stepped access to the upper gable entrance on the left, which has the original boarded door and an exposed timber lintel.

The barn consists of four bays, with a rubble dividing wall between the lower bay and the three-bay main section. The main section has bolted king post trusses, although their raking struts have been removed. The ground level slopes up towards the southwest, with the two upper bays stepped up and featuring slate-flagged floors. A slate slab wall divides these two bays at dado height. The inner entrance lintel on the southeast side is painted with the date 1829.

The stable bay has a cobbled floor, a wooden slatted manger, and planked loose box divisions. The cart-house section features slightly-cambered compound timber lintels over the cart bays, with part-cobbled floors and boarded partitions between the bays, all dating from the 19th century.
