Description

Ye Old College, also known as Yr Hen Coleg, is a building that includes a 2-storey single-bay original house on the right side and a taller, narrower 3-storey 19th-century bay on the left side. The walls are rendered and roughcast beneath a steep slate roof with overhanging eaves. The original house features high-quality timber-framing in its upper storey, which includes chevron bracing. It also has ribbed coving from a former double oriel window, with ogee arches and blind tracery on the outer sides of the coving, and a central heraldic shield surrounded by birds and a smaller shield. The window now has modern 3-light steel-framed casements, with a beam above that may be the tie beam of a former gable.

The lower storey has a mid-20th-century shop front that spans both bays, featuring a low stall riser and a simple deep black fascia. The plate glass shop windows have thin stainless steel frames and include a central island, leading to a central glazed door and overlight with a terrazzo floor. The left-hand bay has a wood-framed cross window on the first floor and a 2-light pointed window with Y-tracery on the second floor. The left side wall contains a 4-pane sash window on both the first and second floors. At the rear, there is a 2-storey wing that has been converted into separate apartments, featuring replacement windows.

Although not inspected, it is reported by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales that the original house retains an arched-brace truss with a curved collar beam and windbraces that are concealed by plaster.
