Description
The Church Institute is a building with a rough-cast render that is now painted white. Its roof is made of small grey and russet slates from Gallt y Llan quarry in Snowdon, laid in graded courses. The structure features a hall with shallow transepts and an exceptional roof that sweeps down to the first floor level. At the intersection of the ridges, there is a conical slated ventilator topped with a cross-pinnacle. A dormer window with a hipped slated roof is set into the roof slope.
On the east-facing gable, there is a tall pointed-arched window with a lozenge shape at the apex, featuring glazing with multiple mullions, transoms, and small leaded lights. Below this window are boarded doors. The gable is supported by a thick buttress with a slated gable. At each end of the main block, there are splayed porches that recall the butterfly plan houses of the period, which were formerly the entrances for men and women. Each porch has two pointed-arched windows in the gable ends and double boarded doors with small lozenge-shaped windows.
The rear elevation mirrors the front but lacks the splayed porches, instead featuring a small service wing at the north corner. The southwest elevation has a gable end window similar to the front gable, while the gable facing northeast has two tall lancet windows separated by a tall stepped and gabled buttress, with a chimney located behind the buttress.
Inside, the building has a lofty and well-lit hall supported by four converging cruck-like beams. There is a stage at the southwest end, which is partially illuminated by dormer windows. A room behind the stage, accessed from the south porch, features a stained wooden post-and-panel partition, along with a room located below the stage. At the northeast end, there is a fireplace made of red and black Buckley bridge with a pointed arch and Islamic tiles. The porches contain lavatories, and the wing at the north corner includes a kitchen.
