Description
The building is a cowhouse attached to Graig Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It is a one and a half storey structure with two windows, featuring a hall/kitchen and two service rooms. The exterior is constructed of rubble masonry, which is whitewashed at the front. It has a steeply pitched new slate roof with skylights at the rear, plain eaves, and raking gable parapets. There is a 19th-century stone stack on the right side.
The cowhouse has 19th-century gabled stone dormers and Victorian sash windows, with similar windows on the ground floor. The left window is enlarged, and there is a stone lintel above the right window. The central doorway has a modern door with a stone lintel above it. To the right, there is a modern rubble extension with a corrugated lean-to roof, and the rear elevation has two windows.
The cowhouse, which replaced an earlier structure that was possibly made of timber, is located to the left and downslope of the farmhouse. It features coursed rubble masonry and a steeply pitched slate roof with raking gable parapets. There are three doorways stepping downhill, each with stone lintels, and a loft entry at the rear from higher ground.
Inside, the cowhouse originally had through purlin collared trusses, but these have been replaced with modern ties and reinforcements. It was originally fully lofted. The interior includes stop-chamfered ceiling beams and joists, a deep timber bressumer above a broad fireplace, a 19th-century central pillar, and a door leading to a stone stair on the left.
