Description
Rhydwen Farmhouse is a two-storey farmhouse with an apsidal end, built in coursed rubble masonry. It features a steeply pitched quarry slate roof laid to diminishing courses, with a hipped roof over the apsidal end, plain eaves, and close verges on the gabled rear elevation. A central stone stack with water tabling is present.
On the entrance front, there is a large single-storey rubble porch offset to the left. The porch has a gabled slate roof with close verges and a round arched doorway framed by stone voussoirs and an arch ring. The entrance includes a plank door with a plain fanlight above, while the sides of the porch have blocked windows.
To the right of the porch, there is a single tier of windows with stone lintels and modern glazing. The apsidal end features one window, a six-pane sash window set under the eaves on the first floor, and a deeper three-light window on the ground floor with an iron toplight in the centre, originally with lead cames, also under a stone lintel. The gabled elevation has two small two-light casements, each with stone lintels.
Adjoining to the north is a contemporary stable built of rubble masonry, with steeply pitched quarry slate roofs laid to diminishing courses and plain eaves. It has two split doors leading to the yard and has been later extended northwards.
There are later 19th-century additions to the east, which provide domestic accommodation over cartsheds. Other later farm buildings, including a hay barn and corn barn with stables, are contemporary with the farmhouse.
Inside, the original staircase sweeps up following the curve of the apsidal end and features a turned newel. The interior also includes original plank doors that are strap and pintle hung.
