Description

The stable located to the north of Rhydwen Farmhouse is a two-storey structure with an apsidal end, built in the 19th century. It features coursed rubble masonry and a steeply pitched quarry slate roof that is laid to diminishing courses. The roof is hipped over the apsidal end and has plain eaves with close verges on the gabled rear elevation. A central stone stack with water tabling is present.

On the entrance front, there is a large single-storey rubble porch that is offset to the left. This porch has a gabled slate roof with close verges and a round arched doorway framed by stone voussoirs and an arch ring. The entrance includes a plank door and a plain fanlight, while the sides of the porch have blocked windows.

To the right of the porch, there is a single tier of windows with stone lintels and modern glazing. The apsidal end has one window elevation, which features a 6-pane sash window set under the eaves on the first floor. The ground floor has a deeper, three-light window with an iron toplight in the centre, originally featuring lead cames, also with a stone lintel. Additionally, there are two small two-light casements on the gabled elevation, each with stone lintels.

Adjoining to the north is a contemporary stable, which also has rubble masonry and steeply pitched quarry slate roofs laid to diminishing courses with plain eaves. This stable includes two split doors leading to the yard and was later extended northwards.

There are later 19th-century additions to the east, which provide domestic accommodation above cartsheds. Other later farm buildings that are contemporary with this stable include a hay barn and a corn barn with stables.

Inside, the original staircase follows the curve of the apsidal end and features a turned newel. The interior also retains original plank doors that are strap and pintle hung.
