Description
Sarn-newydd is a 19th-century farm building constructed from white quartzite boulders and rubble, topped with a slate roof across three bays, with corrugated iron covering the northern end bay and the rear. The structure features a four-bay layout, likely serving as a cowhouse, with a stable and store located at the southeast end, facing the road. The front has three stable-type doors and two very narrow slit vents towards the southeast end. A single door at the rear leads into a small stock yard. The stable section is wider, with an extended roof at the front over a longitudinal store, along with a stable door and a pitching door in the end gable.
Inside the main barn area, the construction includes four pairs of full crucks that span 4.6 meters, set on stone pads, featuring halved-in tie and collar beams, and a tenoned apex. These trusses support two tiers of heavy splay-scarfed purlins and an angled ridge piece, forming four nearly equal bays of about 3.37 meters. The soffits of the collars and ties are drilled for staves, likely originally intended to support wattle and daub, and there is one mortice for a vertical stud. The frame is secured with double square tosh-pegs, and the tie beams extend onto plates on the wall heads. The rafters, which also appear to be original, are drilled for pegs. The northern end bay is partially floored and features a continuous manger along the rear wall, separated from the front store by a timber partition.
