Description

Ty'n y coed is a timber-framed cottage that dates back to an unspecified period, originally featuring wattle and daub infill panels, which have now been replaced with various materials. It stands on stone rubble foundations and has a stone gable wall. The cottage has a slate roof with a rooflight and is two storeys high, comprising two bays with an end lobby-entry plan that includes a living hall and an inner room, along with a later stair leading to two rooms on the first floor. There is a lean-to structure along the rear.

At the northeast end, there is a stone-built farm building in poor condition, which is aligned with and adjacent to the parlour gable end. The entrance features a boarded door that opens into a lobby in front of a timber partition, which is backed by a settle beside the gable fireplace. The fireplace has a high-set fire beam supported by a single post on the entry side, and a stone-built oven projects to the rear, enclosed within the later outshut. The spine beams have small ogee chamfer stops.

Inside, there is a full-height partition made of timber and wattle and daub between the two bays, with woven and split lath infill panels. One of these panels in the living hall bears the inscription "RD 1778" drawn in the plaster finish. On the ground floor, there is an unjointed and nailed post and panelled partition, which is an interesting late survival of traditional construction methods, with the joints of the partition marked up. The upper floor, accessed via the later stair in the inner room or parlour, features a centre truss with upward angle braces leading to the lower of two tiers of purlins, and small raking struts above the collar. The outer walls have been raised, and the rear outshut appears to have been rebuilt from a narrower original.
