Description

The Former Barn Range at Glandwr consists of two former barns that form an L-shaped group surrounding a yard. The east-west range is the oldest, built with well-coursed long slate slabs and featuring a renewed slate roof. It has a high plinth on the south elevation and opposed entrances with voussoirs to the arches. There is a hipped dormer in the roof above the entrance facing the yard. A staircase that once provided access to a loft doorway against the north wall has been removed, and the doorway is now blocked. The gable return has a blocked door with a shouldered lintel to the left, traces of a blocked window to the right, and a small window above the doorway. The south elevation has a single window to the left of the main doorway. To the right is the gable end of the north-south range, which features an arched opening on the ground floor and a single window above it.

The main west-facing elevation of the north-south range, which looks onto the yard, shows two distinct phases of construction. One bay is made of rough rubble and adjoins the east-west barn, while two later bays are constructed of rough block with a higher floor level that takes advantage of the sloping site. These two bays include two cart openings with heavy stone lintels and vent slits in the right-hand bay. At the rear, a modern outshut appears to replace an earlier aisled extension to this barn.

Inside, the original layout features a stone-flagged threshing floor in the east-west range, with evidence of a loft over only the western bay. Both ranges retain their original roof structures, with rough tie-beam trusses and queen struts in the east-west range, and elbowed trusses with collars in the earlier part of the north-south range.
