Description
The former cowhouse and hay-barn at Glandwr is an L-shaped structure dating from the 19th century. It consists of a long single-storey cowhouse and an unusual storeyed haybarn at the southeast end, which takes advantage of the sloping site. The southeast-northwest range was formerly used for open cart or storage bays, and evidence of a water-wheel has been identified at the left-hand gable before reconstruction. The hay barn features roughly coursed and squared rubble blocks, while the cowhouse is constructed of slab, both topped with slate roofs.
The hay barn has a high loft storey with two open round arches on the east and west sides, and a single arch in the south elevation. A date stone with the initials WHJ, representing William Jones, is located between the two western arches. The lower storey includes a plain central entrance flanked by windows, all with stone lintels, although the windows appear to have been widened from their original ventilation slits.
To the northeast of the hay barn, the cowshed range has an entrance on the left and three windows beyond it, with an opposed doorway and five windows in the rear elevation. The adjoining southeast-northwest range is symmetrical around a wide gabled cross-passage, which features a pigeon loft above the segmentally arched opening in the gable. There are wide entrances to the right-hand two bays, separated by a stone partition wall, and a single wide opening to the left, which is partly walled up with a small opening to the right and wood slatting above.
The hay loft has a queen post roof, the cowhouse has a three-bay king-post roof, and the open bays in the southeast-northwest range have queen strut roofs.
