Description

Dolgellau & Barmouth District Hospital is a single-storey building constructed in 1929. It features whitewashed roughcast on a rubble plinth and has steeply pitched roofs adorned with an array of gables and raking dormers, with slates laid to diminishing courses. The eaves are swept and oversailing, supported by kneelers and corbels, with close verges. Brick stacks are present, including a slated gabled shoulder over the theatre block.

The entrance bay is advanced at the center of the original northwest block. It has two-storey gabled bays set at angles, forming an inverted V, which is spanned by a low broad pointed brick arch that carries a tall gable with a deep small paned window featuring iron cames. The pointed doorway has iron-studded double doors and modern steps, with commemorative foundation stones flanking the doorway. The inner flanks of the angled bays have single light windows, while the ground floors and attics feature three-light small paned iron windows, some of which have been replaced. The roof also has raking dormers similar to those of the advanced bay.

Other elevations include tall small paned iron windows set into gables or positioned lower beneath low eaves. The southwest elevation has a half hip over the theatre wing, with the roof sweeping out to create a shouldered canopy over the theatre window at the gable end. This window is large and features plate glass with sidebars and an externally mounted roller blind shutter at the top. The flanks of the wing are supported by shouldered buttresses.

There are modern ranges to the southeast that lack iron windows and have lower pitched roofs, which are not of special interest.
